Part Time (20 hours/week) Legal Assistant, Legal Services

Generally responsible for assisting in the delivery of legal services to clients in civil law matters.  Responsibilities and legal work assignments will be under the supervision and direction of licensed attorneys.  Assignments will involve assisting in tasks and projects relating to the provision of services to clients dealing with domestic violence and conducting community education.  All work is to be conducted in accordance with established policies and procedures and other accepted professional standards.

Other duties include but not limited to:

  •  Assisting the attorneys in working with low-income clients on their civil legal matters;
  • Conducting initial client interviews;
  • Drafting of pleadings, correspondence, or other pertinent documents;
  • Conducting investigation or research regarding facts of a case or a point of law;
  • Effective us of calendaring systems to schedule appointments, ensure timely completion of tasks and work projects, and ensure that all parties are kept informed of court deadlines and appearances;
  • Assist with planning, coordination and implementation of community education projects;
  • Manage data collection and entry, working closely with various groups to facilitate proper data collection;
  • Prepare and maintain accurate and timely activity and time logs;
  • Regularly produce required administrative reports as directed;
  • Prepare and monitor client files;
  • Provide translation services between English and Spanish;
  • Work within the parameters set forth by the Agency and its partner Legal Aid of Northwest Texas to carry out the mission and principles of advocacy as set out by the ABA and each partner agency;
  • Attend and participate in required staff and management meetings, trainings and supervisory sessions;
  • Participate in special projects, or other duties as assigend by the Program Director.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED required, Paralegal Certification or training a plus.
  • Past relevant work experience in a legal environment preferred.
  • Must type a minimum 50 wpm.
  • PC experience is required with a proficiency in Word and Excel, will use and must master software such as ProDoc and PMWin.
  • Excellent organizational, communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work within teams or independently and with a diverse population
  • Bi-lingual (fluent English/Spanish) required.
  • Must maintain a high degree of confidentiality and professionalism, adhering to program policies and procedures.
  • Some local travel.
