Keynote Speaker: Marisa Tomei
Marisa Tomei continues to bridge the gap between rich, dramatic performances and smart, comedic turns. Whether working with large studios or independent houses, she consistently brings her independent spirit to every project. Marisa won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Mona Lisa Vito in My Cousin Vinny. She also traveled to Ethiopia to direct a short film based on the book Half the Sky by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl Wudunn. The film, which was also her directorial debut, focuses on a 13-year-old girl’s struggle with the institutionalized oppression of women in Ethiopia.
2015 Texas Trailblazer: Nancy A. Nasher
The Texas Trailblazer award recognizes a local leader who has achieved significant success, accomplished a “first” to open the doors of opportunity, and blazed a trail for others to follow.
Nancy A. Nasher, along with her husband, David J. Haemisegger, are co-owners of NorthPark Center, North Texas’ largest shopping center. A dedicated philanthropist, Nancy serves on numerous boards and in cultural and educational leadership positions. She has been a champion of the arts and a leader in making art accessible to the community. She serves on the Board of Directors of the Nasher Sculpture Center, a museum founded in 2003 by Nancy’s father, Raymond D. Nasher, and is cocreator and co-founder with her father of the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University. Her commitment to improving the quality of life in Dallas through her support of numerous charities has made a tremendous impact and has changed countless lives for the better. t the luncheon, The Family Place recognizes a member from the community who has achieved significant success despite obstacles faced along the way. The trailblazer is someone who has accomplished a "first" and opened the doors of opportunity for other people and made significant contributions either in their community, business or profession. No matter what the accomplishments, however, the Trailblazer is someone who has blazed a trail for others to follow.
Real-Life Hero: Robert Miller
The Real-Life Hero Award honors an individual who works behind the scenes to create positive change for women and healthy families within our community.
Robert “Bob” Miller spent 64 years at The Dallas Morning News before retiring in June 2015. Miller joined the city desk staff on September 24, 1951 and started out writing obituaries. He was promoted to night city editor, spent 11 years as assistant city editor and seven years as city editor. He started writing his widely read column in 1984 and it became the place for philanthropic and fundraising news. As Bob wrote in his farewell, “The column was different in the beginning, full of names that make news (they taught us that at the Mizzou Journalism School) in the business world, primarily. But eventually I realized that the nonprofits, the old and new Dallas charities, deserved the attention that would create services to help Dallas become an even greater city.”
Advocacy Award: United Way of Metropolitan Dallas
The Advocacy Award recognizes an organization that has played a vital role in furthering the mission of The Family Place, and is a strong voice for victims of family violence.
United Way of Metropolitan Dallas brings people together to improve lives and create lasting change in North Texas by focusing on education, income, and health—the building blocks for strong families and thriving communities. The United Way galvanizes and connect all sectors of society—individuals, businesses, nonprofits, and government—to create long-term change through investing in solutions that produce healthy, well educated and financially stable individuals and families. The United Way raises, invests and leverages more than $50 million annually in community-focused solutions serving Dallas, Collin, Rockwall and southern Denton counties. The Family Place has been fortunate to have United Way support for more than 30 years.
Youth Service Award and Scholarship Winners: Erin Baptiste & Julissa Figueroa
These students are recognized as outstanding leaders for their contribution and participation in The Family Place Be Project program, acting as mentors to educate their peers about healthy relationships in an effort to prevent bullying, teen dating violence and sexual assault. Erin will be attending University of Colorado at Boulder and Julissa is going to The University of Texas at San Antonio.
