The Texas Trailblazer Awards honor those who create positive change and contribute to the quality of life in our community. These individuals lead by example, embody a positive spirit, work tirelessly to help others, and go above and beyond the call of duty to make North Texas a better place.
Keynote Speaker - Tamron Hall
Award-winning journalist, Tamron Hall has been the host of Deadline: Crime with Tamron Hall on Investigation Discovery since September 2013. Tamron was a part of the NBC News team as a co-host of the third hour of NBC News’ TODAY and the anchor of MSNBC Live with Tamron Hall. She received the 2015 Edward R. Murrow Award for Reporting: Hard News in Network Television for her segment on domestic violence as part of TODAY’s “Shine A Light” series and served as a correspondent for the NBC News special “The Inauguration of Barack Obama,” which won an Emmy for Outstanding Live Coverage in October 2010.
Tamron is involved with charitable organizations that strive to end homelessness, illiteracy and domestic abuse. She launched The Tamron <3 Renate Fund with Safe Horizon in honor of her sister to help victims and families affected by domestic violence and most recently, Tamron was a Variety Power of Women Honoree. An active member of the National Association of Black Journalists, she is a native of Luling, Texas, and a graduate of Temple University.
Texas Trailblazer - Michael Sorrell
Dr. Michael J. Sorrell is the longest-serving president in the 146-year history of Paul Quinn College. During his 11 years there, Paul Quinn has become a unique, private minority-serving institution that is remaking higher education by focusing on the most persistent problems of our society. Among the numerous accomplishments during Dr. Sorrell’s tenure has been partnering with PepsiCo to transform the football field into the “WE over Me Farm” to tackle the problem of the South Dallas food desert.
Dr. Sorrell received his JD and MA in Public Policy from Duke University and his EdD from the University of Pennsylvania. He graduated from Oberlin College with a BA in Government and was a two-time captain of the men’s varsity basketball team, graduating as the school’s fifth all-time leading scorer.
Dr. Sorrell was recently named to Fortune Magazine’s list of the World’s 50 Greatest Leaders. He is married to the former Natalie Jenkins. They have two wonderful children, Michael Augustus and Sage Louise-Sinclair.
